Coming by car

Most guests arrive by car. From New Chitose Airport the drive takes about 30 minutes, which makes this a straightforward last night at the end of a trip through Hokkaido — you can spend the evening in the forest and still reach the airport easily the next day. From Sapporo it is about 75 minutes. If you are coming off the Hidaka Expressway, Atsuma IC is about 15 minutes away, and the ferry terminal at Tomakomai East Port is about 18 minutes.

If you are travelling by train, JR Hayakita Station is about 16 minutes away by car. There are ten parking spaces on site. Parking is free for guests staying with us and does not need to be reserved, and there is no valet service — you park and walk in.

Check-in is from 15:00 and check-out is at 10:00. Dinner begins at 18:00, with the last check-in for dinner at 19:00, so it is worth allowing enough time on the road. You can see how an evening here usually unfolds on our day at Mitsu page.

A few things worth knowing

We are cashless. Credit cards, electronic money and QR code payments are all accepted, but we cannot take cash, so it is worth checking before you set off. Closing days vary through the year rather than falling on a fixed weekday, and the calendar on the booking site is the reliable place to see when we are open.

The house itself is a farmhouse that has stood for 120 years, moved here and restored, and it sits inside the forest rather than beside it. There are three guest rooms and no more, so only three groups are here on any night. Each room has its own goemon-style soaking tub in Shigaraki ceramic ware — heated water, not a natural hot spring, and no shared large bath. There is no television in the rooms. Guests who want to know what the rate covers before booking will find it on the rates page.

Using Atsuma as a base

Lake Shikotsu, Lake Utonai and Tomakomai are all within about an hour by car, and each of them changes with the season, so what is worth the drive in June is not what is worth it in October. They also make good stops on the way in or on the way out — somewhere to fill an afternoon before 15:00 check-in, or somewhere to go after checking out at 10:00 rather than heading straight back to the airport.

Reservations

About 30 minutes from New Chitose Airport. A quiet last night in the forest.
